What: Open source softswitch
Why you should care: If you are familiar with Asterisk, you know that open source development has already changed the PBX landscape. Now, another company, Freeswitch, is applying open source telephony technology to create an open source softswitch, the network-side element that can handle some of the same tasks as the open source PBX, but is meant to be a carrier network staple for offering new applications. Open source thinking continues to take over the network.
