Who: Southern Light

Vitals: The carrier, founded in 1998 and based in Mobile, Ala., began as a dark fiber construction firm and now operates a fiber network serving enterprise customers, government clients and other carriers in the Gulf Coast region.

Why you should care: Southern Light is among the earliest adopters of provider backbone transport technology, the latest generation in carrier Ethernet solutions. The company says it prefers PBT to multi-protocol label switching.
