SPOTLIGHT: ICANN initiates IPv6 implementation


The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has begun the implementation of IPv6 in its root servers, the most significant public sector step yet in the transition from IPv4 to IPv6. Other private sector carriers like Verizon Communications already are well into the transition. IPv4 will likely run out of address combinations by 2012, if not sooner. Still, it remains to be seen how widespread and how quickly IPv6 will come into common use.
