Targeted advertising is a much-anticipated capability of IPTV network technology, and though it is usually discussed as something that offers heightened levels of customization and personalization that benefit both advertisers and audiences, anything that can be controlled also can be used to avoid.

Will viewers who fit into certain demographics miss out on advertisements and special offers that viewers in others will get? Telephony talks to John Reister, chief network architect at BigBand Networks, about the issue.
