SPOTLIGHT: Metric of the Week: WiMAX zooms to 2.5 Mbps


Not to spend too much time talking about WiMAX and Xohm in particular, but we also wanted to note that during Motorola's Chicago River boat cruise for media and analysts at WiMAX World, the Motorola platform that will be the basis of Xohm demonstrated downstream speeds of around 2.5 Mbps.

Tom Gruba, senior director of marketing for the Wi4 portfolio at Motorola, said during the post-cruise dinner that the primary intention of the boat ride was to show off 802.16e hand-off capabilities in a live mobile environment, but the dozens of attendees walked away much more impressed with consistent data rates that were in excess of the 2 Mbps minimum that Sprint is seeking for Xohm. "The rates that people experienced are only going to improve," Gruba said.
