Paetec's acquisition of McLeodUSA is almost ready to close, and that means Royce Holland will soon be departing from the CEO job at McLeodUSA. Though he helped create the CLEC industry and enjoyed various degrees of success over the years, he came into McLeodUSA in January 2006 with a very different challenge than he had faced before. Instead of infusing a startup with energy and attitude, Holland had to revitalize an under-achieving telco. The Paetec acquisition, coming amid carrier consolidation that Holland believes will continue, was the final chapter of that challenge.
