Vitals: This telephone cooperative began in 1950 as part of the Verendrye Electric Cooperative, and the following year became the Souris River Telephone (hence "SRT") Mutual Aid Corporation. Now, SRT Communications, based in Minot, N.D., serves about 50,000 telephone customers in North Dakota.

Why you should care: SRT has been deploying an Active Ethernet fiber-to-the-home architecture from Zhone Technologies to provide a new generation of broadband services to its subscribers.
