SummitIG brings dark fiber connection to QTS' Richmond, Va., data center

SummitIG will provide dark fiber connectivity services to QTS Realty Trust's data center campus in Richmond, Va., a sign of the growing trend to extend fiber-based services to colocation centers.

Under the terms of the agreement, SummitIG will terminate directly into QTS' Richmond data center and provide connectivity along its dark fiber route on the I-95 right of way that extends to a number of major northern Virginia locations.

Mike Salviski, vice president product development, QTS, said the new connection will enable it to provide various applications for its customer base.

"The new fiber infrastructure has the ability to run high security platforms, distance sensitive and low latency applications and is a perfect Disaster Recovery solution for the Washington, D.C. metro," said Salviski, in a release.

SummitIG's dark fiber infrastructure will be available immediately to QTS customers.

Bill Cook, CEO at SummitIG, told FierceTelecom that QTS represents a key opportunity for the company's dark fiber network.

"QTS came into the Richmond area and made a significant investment to build a 1.4 million-square-foot data center," Cook said. "We see a lot of opportunities to collocate in that facility, but the customers in that facility want dark fiber and have the scalability and flexibility to control their networks."
