Tata Communications (NYSE: TCL) will now provide both carrier and enterprise customers 100G optical transport solutions along the TGN-Pacific (TGN-P) submarine cable system that connects the U.S and Japan and three routes over the TGN-Intra-Asia (TGN-IA) market throughout Asia.
Leveraging Ciena's (Nasdaq: CIEN) 6500 Packet Optical Transport System (P-OTS), the service provider is upgrading the TGN-P cable system to 100G.
TGN-P and TGN-IA are two of the largest subsea cables deployed in the Pacific region. TGN-P is a 23,000 km cable that provides connections to Emi, Chiba to Hillsboro, Oregon, and Toyohashi as well as Aichi Prefecture to Hillsboro, Oregon. Tata is also deploying the Ciena 6500 platform on the 6,700 km TGN-IA system.
Tata's timing to make this upgrade couldn't be better.
Alan Mauldin, research director at Telegeography, said that the research firm forecasts that "trans-Pacific bandwidth demand to increase 7-fold by 2020" so the "TGN-Pacific system will continue to play a leading role in addressing future demand growth."
This is Tata's latest 100G deployment. The service provider launched a similar 100G-enabled service on its TGN-Atlantic (TGN-A) submarine cable system last January, providing connectivity between New York and London.
This deal is also important to Ciena, which has been one of Tata's go-to optical suppliers. In addition to this latest deal, the vendor was a key supplier for Tata's previous migration to 40G in 2011, which included support for 100G.
