Why you should care: As broadband service providers of all stripes continue to upgrade their networks and services, they may be re-thinking what technologies and interfaces go into a neighborhood network node. Cable TV firms may be moving to smaller nodes, while telcos may look to future-proof in other ways. In any case, the neighborhood node is the center of much current innovation.

Who's doing it: AT&T's approach to Project Lightspeed may have influenced neighborhood node strategies for some telcos. Meanwhile, Qwest Communications is working on node plans as part of its new fiber-to-the-node deployment.
