Telia Carrier has built a new West Coast optical network in the United States to deepen its 100G transport services in its Bay Area metro markets in order to satisfy the growing needs of its content and entertainment provider customers.
Leveraging Infinera's DTN-X series, Telia Carrier is doubling its West Coast backbone with an additional "Pacific Coast Highway" route between the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. The deployment will deepen Telia Carrier's presence in a number of key West Coast metro markets and connect major Internet content providers in the Bay Area with the entertainment and media providers in Hollywood.
In response to growing demand for speedier connections between customers' datacenters, the service provider is also doubling the number of its POPs in the Bay area while also deploying 100G with Infinera's TM-Series platform. Upon completion in June, the service provider will have a total of 11 area metro POPs.
"This announcement is around us building a second route between the Bay Area and LA as well as lighting up four new POPs in the metro Bay Area in Santa Clara and one additional location in San Francisco," said Ivo Pascucci, regional director of Americas for Telia Carrier, in an interview with FierceTelecom. "A lot of this is being driven by our data center to data center 100G transport sales to a lot of the big content and cloud companies that seeing a lot of demand for replication, cache fill and different applications that they are moving onto private networks and have a very dynamic demand requirements for high speed to be delivered quickly between their compute centers and storage facilities."
The build has two main benefits. It can provide low latency connections and redundancy between Silicon Valley and LA.
Pascucci said that the "Bay Area to LA route is going to have a 30 percent latency reduction and will open up more business for us in different verticals like lower-latency gaming."
The service provider can also create an additional path for Asia Pac traffic entering and leaving the U.S. via key submarine cable landing stations in Los Angeles.
"The West Coast is a key region for our network and is a gateway for Asia Pacific," Pascucci said. "There's a lot of activity coming in from cables and from the telecom operators in that region as well as a lot of new deployments from content and application and cloud companies that are deploying in the Bay Area."

Telia Carrier currently provides transit and fiber-based wavelength services to over 680 service provider customers.
