tw telecom, LONI build 260 Gbps-capable network

tw telecom (Nasdaq: TWTC) is lending a hand to Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI), an optical network that connects Louisiana and Mississippi research universities in addition to National Lambda Rail and Internet2, in its effort to build a 260 Gbps network.

Set to go live during the SC10 conference in New Orleans, Nov. 13-19, the SCinet provides the platform conference exhibitors and attendees need to show off high performance computing (HPC) applications and networking experiments that are held during the conference every year.

"LONI relies heavily on our communications providers to build capacity for the state's researchers," said Donald Vandal, executive director of LONI. "tw telecom's business Ethernet connections positively impact our state's research and academic missions."

Although the latest agreement is new, tw telecom and LONI have had a long-standing relationship. Since 2008, tw telecom has provided dedicated Ethernet-based Internet to LONI to connect Louisiana's 12 major research universities.
