tw telecom to extend Kansas City network reach

tw telecom, which is being acquired by Level 3 Communications, is moving to expand its network in Kansas City--the latest stop on a broader network buildout plan.

This latest network build will extend the service provider's reach into North Kansas City, Mo., and Overland Park, Kan., providing additional network diversity for customers that need to cross the Missouri River into downtown Kansas City.

An additional benefit of this project is it includes expansion into several business communities located on both sides of the state line, including Mission, Fairway, Olathe and Leawood, Kan.

Part of this effort included a partnership with NorthPoint Development to help it install new fiber infrastructure to deliver network services to Riverside Horizons, a new 300-acre industrial park at Interstate 635 and Missouri Highway 9 in North Kansas City.

"Additional route diversity and increased capabilities provided by tw telecom's fiber expansion helps enhance the rapid growth that is occurring in the Riverside Horizons Business Park, as well as the Riverside area," said Brent Miles, vice president, economic development, NorthPoint Development.

Network diversity was achieved through the installation of an expanded ring into North Kansas City, which includes diverse paths across the Missouri river to downtown Kansas City and the Riverside, Mo., area.

Kansas City is part of a broader effort the service provider is taking to expand the reach of its metro fiber footprint in the U.S. tw telecom has already extended its fiber network into Salt Lake City and Richmond, Va., with plans to enter into three other new markets–Boston, Cleveland and Philadelphia--later this year.

The service provider also recently received a franchise agreement to build and operate a network along Auburn, Washington's rights of way and it is extending its presence into North Las Vegas and south into Spring Valley and Henderson.
