Verizon (NYSE: VZ) on Thursday said it is on track with its 100G optical network migration, having built out 20,921 additional km (13,000 miles) in the United States and 2,600 km in Europe this year.
"100G expansion will allow for improved network scalability and lower latency to address surging bandwidth demands," said Glenn Wellbrock, director of Optical Transport, Network Architecture & Design at Verizon, in an e-mail to FierceTelecom.
The service provider is taking a tactical approach to its 100G rollout, targeting routes where traffic demand is the highest.
Wellbrock said that they are finding that 100G technology is having positive results in areas where they have deployed it.
"There are significant advantages to a 100G coherent green field build, such as engineering simplicity and operational advantages," he said.
In the United States, Verizon has deployed 100G technology on its Atlanta-to-Tampa, Kansas City-to-Dallas and Salt Lake City-to-Seattle routes. Similar to the first 100G routes it deployed last year, these routes used its existing routers and coherent optical transport equipment.
In Europe, Verizon expanded its 100G network with two new routes--between London and Paris, and London and Frankfurt. These routes, along with the previously deployed Frankfurt-to-Paris 100G route, create a 100G ring on Verizon's production network that spans more than 2,600 kilometers.
Wellbrock said that "the 100G expansion program will continue into 2013 at a similar deployment rate."
Besides the ULH network, Verizon has also put in place the foundation to bring control plane and inject 100G into its metro networks in 2013.
