Verizon (NYSE: VZ) has furthered the capabilities of 100G by deploying the technology on its network in Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, connecting these three locations in one of the highest growth regions it serves today.
Leveraging the Fujitsu Flashwave 9500 ROADM and Ciena 5430 Reconfigurable Switching System, this network build added about 11,681 terrestrial and submarine miles to the telco's growing 100G network. These additional miles add to the over 32,000 100G miles already deployed on Verizon's U.S. network and 8,500 100G miles on its European network.
A key element of this deployment is being able to scale existing fiber network infrastructure. Verizon said that each of these network routes will be able to support up to 10 times the amount of network traffic that can be carried on a standard route, allowing for better use of the existing fiber infrastructure. They can also carry traffic on a single 100G wavelength instead of having to use 10 individual wavelengths operating at 10 Gbps.
These new 100G routes will enable Verizon to stay apace with the growing demand for cloud services.
The service provider said that it expects in its recent set of Secure Cloud Interconnect agreements with cloud providers Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), Salesforce, HP, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Amazon Web Services (NASDAQ: AMZN) "to fuel the demand for 100G connections between the Asia-Pacific region, Europe and the U.S."
Deploying 100G is just one part of Verizon's next-gen optical vision. In December, Verizon deployed 200G technology over about 200 miles on its long-haul production network between Boston and New York, a move it will likely duplicate in other markets.
