Windstream expands data center presence in Charlotte, NC

Windstream's (Nasdaq: WIN) new subsidiary Windstream Hosted Solutions is opening a third data center in Charlotte, N.C. to target new colocation and managed cloud services opportunities.

Although it can't reveal the exact address of the new center due to security concerns, the 7,200 square foot facility is in the city's uptown area.

Seeing a growing potential in data centers and managed cloud services, Windstream purchased Hosted Solutions for $310 million in December.

Windstream is certainly not the only in growing its managed services and cloud business organically and via acquisition.

Following Windstream's acquisition of Hosted Solutions and TDS Telecom's (NYSE: TDS) acquisition of TEAM, there's been a flurry of cloud acquisitions beginning with Verizon's (NYSE: VZ) acquisition of Terremark and most recently CenturyLink's proposed deal to acquire Savvis (Nasdaq: SVVS) this week.

For wireline-centric service providers like Windstream that are seeing continual declines of their traditional voice business continuing to decline, are looking to managed services, cloud services and colocation as new sources of wireline revenue.
