X by Orange takes cloud-native approach to serving business customers

Orange Spain subsidiary X by Orange is embracing a cloud-native platform to deliver digital services to its business customers.

X by Orange is notable because it eschews traditional network infrastructure and legacy hardware by instead creating a separate platform that is software-based. Using Red Hat's OpenShift Container Platform, along with its consulting team, X by Orange is able to put services in a public cloud by using the greenfield, cloud-native platform.

The Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform enables X by Orange to create and deliver new services at a faster pace than traditional legacy infrastructure is able to deliver. The platform gives X by Orange a provider-agnostic Kubernetes offering on top of multicloud infrastructure.

X by Orange skips the more costly NFV-based deployments that use virtualized network functions (VNFs) for services, such as firewalls and security, on virtual customer premises equipment. If X by Orange proves to be successful in Spain, France-based Orange could roll a similar service offering into the other countries that it serves.

The new platform lets X by Orange enable DevOps approaches and agile development to create and deliver digital services to business customers.  The initial service offerings include unified communications, data privacy based on SD-WAN, and "legal" music for retail stores. X by Orange plans on growing the portfolio to include additional services and applications.

“Leaving behind the burden of legacy systems, we are committing fully to DevOps and agile and have a long-term vision for the success of X by Orange," X by Orange's Jose Maria San Jose Juarez, chief technical and information officer, in a prepared statement..  "We believe in the power of open source to accelerate innovation and with Red Hat’s technology stack, we can better tap into the rapid development in upstream communities while depending on enterprise-grade stability, support and enhanced security from Red Hat products.

"We chose Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform for the freedom it gives us on top of different public clouds, all rooted in Kubernetes-native APIs and experience. We want to maintain a flexible foundation to collaborate with diverse players to provide the services our customers want and need, and we trust in Red Hat’s deep experience in enabling flexibility and integration across an extensive ecosystem of certified partners.”
