XO Communications gains larger foothold in Charlotte, NC market

Having met its 1 million enterprise VoIP customer mark last week, XO Communications (OTC BB: XOHO.OB) is now expanding its metro network coverage in the Charlotte, N.C. metro area.

Similar to other network expansion efforts it took over the past year on the West Coast in Los Angeles and Seattle, the Charlotte expansion will not only expand the reach of its 19,000-mile network, but also establish new points of presence.

Along with providing its traditional fiber-based services, a key component of the expansion will be Ethernet over Copper service, which XO recently deployed in the Charlotte market. As of mid-September, XO expanded its EoC network by more than 30 percent with increased coverage in 39 existing markets in addition to new markets in Charlotte, N.C., Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y.

While XO has not had a problem extending its fiber network to area buildings, its EoC service has helped it grow its overall Ethernet business with a service that targets SMBs with a service that can scale in 3 Mbps increments up to 20 Mbps.
