XO Communications said it has deployed at least 10 CRS-1 core routers from Cisco Systems as part of an optical backbone upgrade in nine markets. The XO deployment, along with another CRS-1 deployment by Savvis Communications, is being seen as giving Cisco better traction against its main core router competition, Juniper Networks (XO also uses Juniper core routers). Market research pointed to a recent dip in Cisco market share for core routers, and such deals may be allowing the vendor to bounce back at a time when it is intensifying its focus on the service provider market.
