Dell's CTO talks 3 pillars of telco AI

Dell is starting to move into the telco artificial intelligence (AI) area.

Manish Singh, CTO of the telecom systems business at Dell, told Silverlinings AI in general is a very strategic focus for the company. The firm is undertaking tasks like Project Helix with Nvidia, which is intended to unlock the possibilities of large language models (LLMs) for enterprises.

“Within telecom we definitely are focusing more on three key areas,” he explained.

First and foremost on performance optimization, Singh said, it is looking at how and where can it can apply machine learning and AI to get better performance and spectral efficiency on the network.

Secondly, it is also looking at using AI to improve energy efficiency and sustainability, the CTO said.

“We know that these networks are dimensioned for peak traffic and peak traffic does not stay throughout the day,” he noted. “There are a lot of infrastructure and radios that are up and running. There is massive opportunity to improve the energy efficiency.”

Singh stated that AI and machine learning is a great way of achieving that.

Its final area of focus is around generative AI, particularly for customer service and field service applications.“It’s still early days on that,” he noted.

We'll probably hear more from Dell on this around Mobile World Congress (MWC) next year. So stay tuned for our live updates from the show in February.
