The move is bound to spark new talk about potential buyers for startup, Nutanix.
Cisco has launched a new hybrid-cloud system, in partnership with Nutanix, that is intended to take on the likes of VMware and Red Hat in the enterprise software-as-a-service (SaaS) market.
A Cisco spokesperson told Silverlinings via email that the new software is expected to be available before the end of the year.
“The new offering integrates Cisco's SaaS-managed compute and networking infrastructure (Cisco Unified Computing System with Cisco Intersight) with the Nutanix Cloud Platform (Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure, Nutanix Cloud Manager, Nutanix Unified Storage, and Nutanix Desktop Services) and will be sold by Cisco,” the spokesperson wrote.
The spokesperson said that the system is aimed at helping “customers simplify and automate their IT environments.”
“This partnership should strengthen Cisco's hybrid-cloud solutions and help accelerate hybrid multi-cloud adoption for its customers,” Roy Chua, principal at AvidThink told us.
“It certainly is a play against VMware and Red Hat.” Chua said.
However, the Cisco spokesperson noted that the Nutanix Cloud Platform is certified with Red Hat OpenShift.
“It also provides alternatives to public cloud,” Chua commented.
Potential buyers?
The Cisco-Nutanix partnership is bound reawaken speculation about the future of the startup. There have already been plenty of rumors about Cisco, HPE or IBM bidding for the startup.
