Broadband home gateways on track to become consumer's entertainment, service portal

Jim Barthold, FierceIPTVHumax may be not be a household name in the United States, but it is hoping that by increasing its ownership stake in broadband gateway vendor MMC Technology, from about 13 percent to 21.98 percent, that will change. The vendor's move, as indicated by Jim Barthold at FierceIPTV, could be part of a new trend where the home gateway may replace the set-top box (STB) as the main device in the home to deliver a mix of traditional video, voice and data, in addition to a number of emerging over-the-top video and interactive services.
