Lanner Electronics has joined the Open Compute Project as a community member in order to help accelerate white box solutions for edge data centers.
White box vendors such as Lanner are becoming increasingly important as network operators move from proprietary hardware to more generic hardware that can run a variety of open software operating systems.

Facebook launched OCP eight years ago as an open-source hardware initiative to drive the deployment of web-scale operations and services. Today, OCP has thousands of engineers from close to 200 member organizations working on more energy-efficient hardware equipment for the likes of hyperscale data centers and large service providers. Late last year, AT&T put its white box router specifications into OCP.
Over four years ago, Lanner started to focus on the SD-WAN market by offering white box virtual customer premises equipment and universal customer premises equipment, mobile edge compute servers, and hyper converged infrastructure-ready platforms solutions for use at edge data centers.
"The OCP is well positioned to catalyze the transformation of the networking industry with its newly established strategic plan," said Jeans Tseng, general manager and vice president of Lanner Telecom's applications business unit, in a statement. " We are very excited to contribute to OCP and develop next-generation networking platform for SD-WAN, MEC, and HCI-ready solutions for the community."
