PAETEC scores 5-year DoD contract at Ft. Detrick, MD

PAETEC (Nasdaq: PAET), which is in the process of being acquired by Windstream (Nasdaq: WIN), has signed a Department of Defense (DoD) deal to supply the Army with voice, data, and Internet service at Ft. Detrick.

Located near Frederick, Md., Ft. Detrick houses the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (MRMC) and the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), which develops medical solutions to protect military service members from biological threats.

Similar to other DoD contracts PAETEC has won via its Intellifiber subsidiary, the Ft. Detrick implementation network provides various network access points to ensure redundancy for 10,000 voice circuits. Along with voice services, PAETEC will provide private Ethernet data network services and Internet access services that will enable military and civilian employees to communicate with other government and civilian companies.

The DoD has become a key customer for PAETEC. While PAETEC had a growing government solutions business, its own acquisition of the former Cavalier Telephone, which included the Intellifiber subsidiary, brought over 500 DoD contracts to the service provider. Other recent government deals include the Ft. Drum Army base in Jefferson County, Aberdeen Proving Ground, and the Army Corps of Engineers in Hampton Roads, Va.

When Windstream completes its acquisition of PAETEC early next year, the independent ILEC will also gain the benefit of an even larger public sector customer base.
