tw telecom expands fiber presence in Maryland and Idaho

tw telecom (Nasdaq: TWTC) on Tuesday expanded its fiber network into both Montgomery County, Md., and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, as part of its ongoing movement to serve a greater set of business customers in key growth markets.

The company's expansion into Montgomery County will complement its fiber and service footprint in neighboring areas including Northern Virginia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Likewise, in the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, business district, the CLEC's fiber expansion will give businesses another alternative provider.

Already offering fiber-based services in Spokane, Wash., and Boise, Idaho, tw telecom said the network expansion will serve hundreds of businesses in both Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls, Idaho.

Over these new fiber networks, tw telecom will focus on providing its Business Ethernet services, including its new Intelligent Network services such as Enhanced Management and Dynamic Capacity.

With Enhanced Management, customers can view all of their network on either an end-to-end or segment-by-segment basis and monitor network performance in real-time. Accessed through a customer portal, Dynamic Capacity, a bandwidth-on-demand solution, enables businesses to increase their bandwidth up to three times their subscribed data rate to deal with special events like a major backup session, for example.

While it appears the initial focus of these network builds is on retail Ethernet services, the CLEC will likely also build out its new "One to Many" wholesale service, which enables wholesale carrier customers to get access to all of its 75 markets through one interconnection point.

tw telecom's dedication to Ethernet and VPN continues to be the right strategy. In Q3 2012, Ethernet and VPN service sales drove a 14.9 percent increase in data and Internet services revenue.
