Verizon is pulling out all the stops lately to prove the viability of FiOS. Following its recent move to end long-term service contracts, Verizon has completed its second trial of XG-PON where it connected a FiOS customer location with 10 Gbps/2.5 Gbps connection.
Conducted in Taunton, Mass. over a Motorola XG-PON system, the test equipped the customer's home with an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) that received the 10/2.5 Gbps feed and two communications ports to provide transmission speeds of almost 1 Gbps to each of the two PCs inside the home. In total, the two ports delivered about 1.85 Gbps in aggregate bandwidth in both the upstream/downstream direction.
The latest test was developed to understand what two different customers might experience when using their PCs to download, upload or share files to the Internet if they were served by a 10G PON system. A simultaneous speed test was conducted at Verizon's speed test server in Reston, Va. achieved speeds of up to 915 Mbps between the PC and the speed test server.
While it has not made any formal commitment to Motorola, Verizon did say that it will continue testing XG-PON with other vendors in the lab and network with plans to submit a request for information (RFI) on XG-PON by the end of the year. Last December, Verizon conducted a similar XG-PON test with Huawei XG-PON gear in Southeastern, Mass.
