Verizon tops IDC's Asia Pacific telecom services report

Verizon's (NYSE: VZ) aggressive global network buildout into international countries, especially the Asia-Pacific region, has gotten the attention of IDC, which named the telco a top player in its annual APAC report.

IDC said the service provider gained a top spot on its "IDC MarketScape: Asia/Pacific Next Generation Telecom Services 2011 Vendor Analysis" because of its ongoing global network upgrades, data center investments and security products, in addition to enhancing the global enterprise customer's experience.

Evidence of Verizon's aggressive APAC network expansion was exemplified in its Singapore deployment. Verizon built a fiber network that reached into the northern and western parts of Singapore to increase network coverage, and doubled capacity for enterprise customers with access to key assets, including its submarine cable landing stations and area data centers.

To compete effectively in the international business services market, service providers need to have some common elements, including wide network access to deliver services like Ethernet over both their own network facilities and through other service provider partners, IDC noted.

Driven to serve the multinational corporation (MNC) customer's multi-location needs, Verizon has continued to build out and augment its APAC network to support international IP VPN and Ethernet services, managed services (including cloud services), and professional IT services (excluding support services).

Two key pieces service capabilities that set apart service providers like Verizon in the international market is having both global availability and Ethernet access to VPNs.

IDC, of course, is not alone in recognizing Verizon as a major international telecom player. Vertical Systems Group ranked Verizon as the second largest international Ethernet player on its Global Ethernet Leaderboard, trailing only Orange Business Services.
