The top 5 cloud roles that are the most in demand right now

Layoffs swept the tech landscape last year and have continued into 2024. Hyperscalers weren’t immune, but that’s not to say cloud skills aren’t still in demand. We reached out to job website Indeed.com to get the latest data about what cloud-related roles companies are hiring for right now. Here’s what we found.

1) Software Engineer/Senior Software Engineer

Though these are technically separate job titles, together they make up more than 19% of all cloud job listings posted to Indeed.com. Software Engineer had a slight edge with 9.98% but Senior Software Engineer was close behind with 9.21%. Indeed’s data showed the “Software Engineer” job title appeared in 627 out of every 1 million listings on the site, compared to 579 per 1 million for “Senior Software Engineer.”

Over on LinkedIn's Jobs site, there were more than 27,600 U.S. listings containing the search term "software engineer."

2) Software Architect

We’re sticking in the same neighborhood for the next title, which appeared in 8.32% of cloud job listings. According to Indeed, Software Architects have similar roles to Software Engineers, but may be in a more senior position depending on the company. They are also usually responsible for ensuring code is aligned to the intended design.

Interestingly, this title was significantly less popular on LinkedIn, with only 789 postings in the U.S. containing the term.

3) Full Stack Developer

Applications are where it’s at! Indeed’s data revealed 6.14% of cloud jobs or 386 per million listings were for full stack developers. These developers have a broad knowledge base, covering both the front and band end of an application and have database, server configuration and UI know how, according to Indeed’s definition.

There were over 2,100 U.S. listings for "full stack developer" on LinkedIn Jobs.

4) Cloud Engineer

Coming in with 5.64% of cloud jobs were cloud engineers. These specialists use their knowledge to design and build cloud infrastructure for a range of use cases. This title also appeared to be fairly popular on LinkedIn Jobs, with 1,533 listings in the U.S.

5) Data Engineer

The last of the roles accounting for more than 5% of cloud listings on Indeed was that of Data Engineer, with 5.16%. Folks in this role develop systems to manage and interpret the flow of data across an organization. Given how much information is traversing the cloud these days, it's no wonder they're in demand. Over on LinkedIn, there were nearly 5,200 U.S. job listings for data engineers.

Zooming out

In terms of what the job marketplace looks like more broadly, data from LinkedIn’s January Workforce Data Report showed hiring in the Technology, Information and Media segment increased 9.8% sequentially in December.

The year-over-year figure for the segment wasn’t so rosy, coming in a -10.1%. Still, it seems like things are finally trending in the right direction.

“Hiring in Technology, Information, and Media is now up 11.6% compared to July (vs overall hiring which is virtually unchanged over the same period),” the report noted. LinkedIn measures this metric by dividing new hires by the number of LinkedIn members.

One other (kind of obvious) thing to note: A different LinkedIn report from November 2023 highlighted the rise in both AI job listings and interest in those postings. In the U.S., the most in-demand skills in these job postings include machine learning, data structures and natural language processing.

Interestingly, the tech sector isn’t leading the charge in terms of demand. The number one industry demanding AI skills is professional services. Though the exact breakdown varies by region, in the U.S. that’s followed by Administrative and Support Services, Retail, Manufacturing and – finally – Technology, Information and Media.
