Savvis brings virtual hosting services to China

Savvis, CenturyLink's (NYSE: CTL) cloud and hosted IT subsidiary, on Tuesday added more website hosting capabilities in China to appeal to companies that are trying to establish their web presence in the country.

Any of Savvis' customers that host their web content via cloud computing, managed hosting or colocation in one of its data centers can use its virtual hosting services.

Savvis said that this service can help its customers in two ways: simplifying the process of making web content live in China, and improving the way sites performw which in turn facilitates a better end-user experience.

Companies trying to establish a web presence in China have been plagued with complex local government rules, poor network interconnectivity, and latency issues. These companies also have had to navigate a complex process to get content hosting licenses.

"Chief marketing officers know that China is one of the most desirable markets in the world, but complicated regulations and other issues prevent their e-commerce sites, online product promotions and other web content from reaching this coveted audience," said Mark Smith, managing director, Asia, at Savvis.

One way that the new virtual hosting services can reduce network latency is that the service includes a website-acceleration solution that uses caching and dynamic delivery technology to distribute web content to end-users in China through a widespread network of in-country content delivery network (CDN) nodes.

In addition to the recent expansion of its domestic U.S. data center facilities, Asia-Pacific is a major growth target for Savvis. Over the past year, the service provider has expanded its data facilities and cloud offerings in Hong Kong, Japan, and Tokyo.
